The Nutty Putty Cave is managed natural resource owned privately and located on private property. The cave is gated and access is limited to two groups of cavers at any given time.

Helmets Required
HELMETS ARE REQUIRED
One of our first Trip Leaders led a group with no helmets. He stated “I don't like using helmets. I tend to have to take them off to get through places and often break roof growth.” Our response to this is that if you refuse to wear a helmet, then don’t visit the Nutty Putty Cave.

RESERVATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED

To reserve a date and time you will need to click on the day you desire below. You will then see the day view with 6 different access times. Each reservation is good for 5 hours inside the cave. This gives you a half hour of unobstructed access at the beginning and end of each 5 hour block. If you need more time, then reserve 2 time slots back to back (Any day but Saturday... The demand is just too great on Saturdays).

ACCESS REQUIREMENTS: Please review the current Nutty Putty Cave Management Plan.

14 DAYS NOTICE: Reservations for the general public must be made at least 14 days prior to your trip (Per the cave management plan agreement) - Experienced Timpanogos Grotto members can fast track their reservations with just 5 days notice due to their ongoing service to the cave.

GROUP SIZE: 4 minimum, 10 maximum - Trip leaders assume all responsibility for the well being and safety of their group. All expenses for rescues, extractions, and medical care are the responsibility of the trip leader and group members.

REQUIRED CAVE GEAR: Helmets, helmet mounted light, 2 more dependable light sources, footwear, and appropriate clothing (See our Equipment page).

CURFEW: MIDNIGHT - All visitors and vehicles should be off the land owner’s private property by midnight.
NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING ALLOWED WITHIN 1 -1.5 MILES OF THE CAVE - See the CAMPING page for details.

Are you a first timer that needs a planned trip to join? Does your group need a Cave Guide? Want to volunteer as a Cave Guide?

FEE: FREE The cave maintenance fees are being offset by private donations. We encourage all groups to make a $10 donation and receive NUTTY THE WEATHER BAT, the official bat of the Nutty Putty Cave. Trip Leaders will also need to agree to the $25 safety deposit. The $25 safety deposit is billed when there is damage incurred by the group, and/or damage or loss to the locking system of the cave, and/or when the Trip Leader fails to submit his online Trip Report within 7 days following their trip.

CANCELLATIONS: To cancel a reservation, just return to the day and time of the reservation and click on the UnBook icon. It will then prompt you for your password that you selected when you reserved the time.

RESERVATION TIME SLOTS: Look below at the Calendar and select a day. On the new screen, you will see only 6 time slots available and each is only 30 minutes long. All of the grayed out time slots are not reserved by other groups. Instead, we are only showing the 6 available 30 minute unobstructed entry access time slots each day. DAY VIEW LEGEND - You will see only 6 half hour slots available each day. The half hour is your unobstructed time slot to get into the cave. It is important that you start exiting the cave at the 4.5 hour point so that you do not encroach on another group‘s access time. If you need more time, then reserve two, three, or all 6 time slots in a day.

CLEARING UP THE CONFUSION

The reservation system has created some confusion with those making the reservation, so let’s take the time to explain. Here was a recent complaint lodged...

Dear Management Team:

We would like to reserve a time to cave.  Every single day on the calendar shows the same times already reserved.  Can this be correct?  Is it impossible to schedule other than 7 - 8 in the morning, 12 - 2 or between 7 - 8?  Please tell me what really is available.  Great website but in the end of no use since can't access the cave. Here was our response to David...

David:

I appreciate your frustration, and will try to eliminate any confusion. There are 6 time slots available for access into the cave each day. Each time slot is 5 hours in duration. If you need a longer time, then reserve two time slots back to back (any day but Saturday). The reservation page shows the six 30 minute cave entrance time slots that allow groups the ability to enter without being bothered by other groups during that reserved time. Obviously I need to better convey this on the website’s reservation page. So let me paint the scenario...

Let’s say you want to go caving on the 21st of May and your group is an early morning type. Go to that day on the calendar and click on either the 7 AM or the 7:30 AM time slot. Let’s say that you pick the 7 AM time slot. This means that you need to set your group’s travel schedule to allow you to be standing above the cave opening at 7 AM and you have the right of way into the cave until 7:30 AM. Once inside the cave you just set your time schedule so that you start exiting by 11:30 AM so that you can be out by noon (5 hours later). You will see that all of the times between 8AM and 12:30 PM are grayed out because there are no new groups entering at those times. The maximum amount of groups at any one time is 2 inside the cave.

So let’s take it one step further and your group is slow to wake up and you don’t make it to the cave until 7:40 AM and the 7:30 AM group is already entering. They have the right of way until 8 AM. You will have to wait until they are done entering because they have reserved the access from 7:30 to 8 AM and then again from noon to 12:30 to 1 PM for their exit.

And finally, if you are really late and don’t arrive until 9:30 AM. That is fine, but you still have to be out of there by Noon.
